How to:

First, set your self up for success and buy a smooth foam roller. The bumpy ones can just cause unnecessary bruising and discomfort. Also, try and find a longer roller, the width- 2 feet or 3 feet will allow you to use the roller in a variety of ways.

You will be in a plank, side plank or reverse plank (facing up) to roll your legs and glutes and it can be challenging to hold up your body weight if you don’t regularly do so.

Foam rolling is basically exactly as it is stated, roll on the foam roller in any spot that feels good. It can be a bit uncomfortable at times but try not to go above a 6 on a pain scale out of 10- 10 being the worst pain you have felt.

Starting in a plank position, roll from the point of your hips down to just above your knees. Then turn into a side plank position and roll from the top of the pelvis through the side of the hip to above the knee. You may find it nice to pause at the dip in your hip between the pelvis and the leg bone. Then turn into a reverse plank position and sit on the roller, roll from just above your sit bones down to behind the knee. Also in this position you can roll the calves, start below the knee and roll down to the ankle.

Keep rolling back and forth on the roller as many times as you want in these positions, always moving at a pace comfortable for you. Doing one leg at a time will put more pressure on that group of muscles.

Benefits:

Foam Rolling can be a bit of a workout. You will be in a plank, side plank or reverse plank (facing up) to roll your legs and glutes and it can be challenging to hold up your body weight, for this reason foam rolling is great way to warm up prior to exercises.

Foam Rolling can also be a good way to cool down from exercise as you can move slower on the roller to lower your heart rate and at the same time provide compression and fascial manipulation to the tissues while the body is warm. The compression will push blood out of the tissues then allow a rush of new blood bringing with it nutrients and oxygen to your tired muscles and tissues.

Contraindications:

Avoid rolling over injured areas or if rolling will put you in a position that can affect an injury that you aren’t targeting with the roller. Talk to a professional before trying it out and to get a personalized training experience.

Indications:

Anyone who has sore, tired or achy muscles and those who feel fine but wish to bring fresh blood and nutrients into their tissues before or after a workout. You can also do Foam rolling at any time of the day, it does no have to coincide with a workout.

What are the Pillars of Wellness? Why should you care? How does someone become Healthy?

There are many ways one can view their health; medically (eg. “I have no diagnosed disease, therefore I am healthy), physically (eg. “I can run 5 miles and lift 100 lbs, therefore I am healthy”), nutritionally, emotionally, socially and so on.

Essentially, everything existing around you is a part of your health or wellness in some way. If you have a pristine food and exercise regime, you are likely an exceptional athlete. However if you never leave yourself time to socialize, your overall mental and emotional health will likely suffer. In time, these often begin to affect physical health. If your food and exercise could use some work, but you have worked a lot on your mental and social well being, good job! But, you see the trend, if some pillars are ignored, the building will fall down eventually.

If we view the Pillars of Wellness model as someone being considered healthy, only when all of the pillars are maintained and given the attention they need, then we have something.

Squamish Chief Seattle says it best:

“Humankind has not woven the web of life.

We are but one thread within it.

Whatever we do to the web we do to ourselves.

All things are bound together.

All things are connected.”

Now, before you go thinking this is just all about woo-woo spiritual things…

We can relate to the “web” by looking at your family home as one. One thread each for:

the physical house

finances to keep the house

for the people in it

you, your needs

the needs of others

When one part of the web is damaged, the whole web is fragile.

With this knowledge in mind, take a moment to look at your life and reflect:

Which of your pillars need some attention?

Which of your pillars is strong?

Are there any obstacles that seem to be consistent with all pillars? (example; work schedule, self confidence, family demands, financial etc)

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a technique where cups are placed on the skin and then suction is created to lift the skin up into the cup. Cupping as a soft tissue tool simply means to use the cups to aid in the treatment of soft tissue- muscles and skin, etc.

At Greenwood Hill, RMT Jadelyn does deep tissue massage therefore, puts a lot of stress on her joints and she is constantly treating with COMPRESSION. Cupping allows RMT’s to decrease stress on their hands and use DECOMPRESSION. Why? You have layers under your skin that get stuck together, cupping pulls them apart and lets blood flow in and allows your lymph fluid to move.

History

Cupping dates back almost 3000 years, starting in ancient China and Egypt. It has been used as a healing tool in many cultures and in many ways beginning with with bamboo or ceramic cups. Suction was created using heat displacement or like in North America, Native Americans used bones, horns and shells to create cups and used their mouths to create suction.

Cupping was seen to provide many benefits, for the Chinese it was believed to open up ” meridian pathways” and it was also used to treat pulmonary disease. The Egyptian’s believed it could remove any foreign matter from the body. It was then introduced the Arabia, where they developed “Hijama” or “wet cupping” where they place a small cut under the cup and use the cup to remove blood from the tissue which is believed to speed healing and remove toxins.

Modern Cupping

We now have glass, plastic and silicone cups, allowing massage therapists to use cupping as a soft tissue treatment tool. Meaning, they are used to help the muscle, skin and fascia perform better.

RMT’s are trained how to use them properly and if you have any questions about cupping and if it could be useful for you, please ask your RMT!

How is arthritis effecting my dog’s life? What can I do to help my dog?

These may be some questions that you start to ask as your pet gets older and may start show symptoms of arthritis. Moving slower, struggling to get up from lying down and off and on lameness can be signs that your dog may be developing osteoarthritis. This is the type of arthritis that we can get as we age. As people we can let our doctor know what we are feeling and we can do something about it. Some of us take medication or use a cream. Dogs cannot do this, so as responsible owners we can contact our vet.

Options form your vet

Your vet has many options to help treat your pet’s arthritis, and oral medication such as an anti-inflammatory or glucosamine may be prescribed. There are new injectable medications that are working for some dogs that I have treated and of course, Massage Therapy can work wonders for your pet.

Non-medicated Options, or options that go along with medication!

Because massage therapy moves fluid around in the body, it can help move around the stagnant fluid in the joints which can alleviate some discomfort associated with osteoarthritis. A Canine Massage Therapist may choose to work on the muscles around the sore joints and do some passive movements of the joints (moving the joint through its range of motion without the dog using its own muscles) to help get the joint fluid moving.

Canine Chiropractic and acupuncture are also good options that you could explore! As an RMT, I always recommend that you use chiropractic and massage services in conjunction with each other. Massage helps to relax the muscles which makes skeletal adjustment last longer.

Little Tips

Gentle, slow paced walks are great for older dogs as they help keep the joint fluid moving, without too much strain on your pet.

Always talk to your veterinarian before trying any kind of medication for your pet, and to see if Massage Therapy can help your dog as they age.

Here is a good read on osteoarthritis in dogs! This article helps explain what is happening with your dog’s joints as they develop arthritis. Canine Osteoarthritis: Age Is Not A Disease

Massage Therapy has been seen in records dating back to 2700BCE! The history of animal massage is not as detailed, at least that we know of. Although I’m sure there was an animal loving ancestor who decided to try it out.

Canine Massage History

Canine massage became popular when Jack Meagher developed the use of massage therapy on horses. Meagher was influential in helping people realize the benefits of massage therapy for a wider range of people and animals. He is know for coming up with the idea of “sports massage”. He helped people realize that massage was not just relaxing,. It had extremely helpful benefits to people with injuries and had a large roll in preventing injuries. Meagher was confident in his ability to help people, so he decided that he would try some techniques out on horses. He started work with horses in 1975 and animal massage bloomed from there.

The IAAMB

The International Association of Animal Massage And Body Work works to provide a source for animal massage therapists and establishes a professional community. It was established in 2000 and has made steps to encourage proper education and development in the field.

Jonathan Rudinger Founder of PetMassage

PetMassage has been a leader in canine massage education and has helped develop professional advances in the fields, such as helping set up the IAAMB. Since 1997 they have been helping people learn about Canine Massage benefits!

Here at Greenwood Hill, Jadelyn takes her 3 year education as a Registered Massage Therapist and her education from the Royal Canadian College of Massage Therapy for Canine Massage and combines them in order to provide you with an educational and healing experience for you and your dog. See Canine Massage for details on our services.

We are going to give you yet another baking soda use! As well as introduce a product that you may not have heard of! Both of these together may help get that skunky dog smelling better quicker!

When you have a skunky dog, there seems to be no end to the smell. No matter how much you clean and scrub your much-too-adventurous friend, nothing seems to help. There seems to be endless recipes online that claim to get rid of the smell and personally I have tried some weird ones on my friends dogs…like toothpaste? It didn’t work…

The Blissful Dog company is an American company that we have recently connected with! They sell great all-natural products for your dog and carry a great line of shampoos that are scientifically proven to be effective and good for your dogs skin and coat health!

What do you know they also have a recipe for de-skunking your dog!

Dirty Dirrrty Dog Shampoo and Soap are affordable and natural. This is the line that is recommended in this 2 step process for de-skunking.

Recipe: Mix the following:
1⁄4 cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap (DAWN Dishwashing Liquid is our preferred soap)
Quart of hydrogen peroxide.
Work the solution into your dog’s coat well and rinse.
Repeat as needed.
Follow with a bath using DIRTY DIRRRTTY SHAMPOO or SOAP

Homemade dog treat recipes

Greenwood Hill makes homemade dog treats for its canine clients and we are here to give you some of our favorite recipes!
We all want to know what our dog is eating, and we have all heard of the nasty rumours of how treats, toys and dog food is made, Homemade dog treats are one of the easiest ways to know exactly what your dog is eating. Homemade dog treats are very easy to make and usually have few ingredients. Your local bulk food store is a great place to go and get the ingredients.
The first recipe I want to share with you is a salmon based recipe. I fetched this from Pinterest and made a double batch for give-aways at a demo. All my dogs LOVED them, so I thought it would be a good recipe to share!

Pumpkin and salmon dog treats:
– 1 large tin of water packed salmon (can substitute tuna if you want)
– 1 cup of cooked, unseasoned pumpkin (pumpkin is great for dogs!)
– ¼ cup of ground flax (optional, I like flax so I used it! Its good for coat health)
– 1 ¼ cups rice flour (or all purpose if you want, I used whole wheat)
Preheat oven to 350 F
Line tray with parchment paper
Combine all ingredients
Roll out dough to ¼ inch thick adding flour as needed and then use a cookie cutter, or just cut into squares.
Bake for 10-15 mins. Mine were roughly the size of a quarter and I cooked them for 12 mins.
Let cool and then store in a room temperature area. I froze them for about a week and then took them out, they were soft until they came to room temperature, then they hardened up.

Another homemade dog treat recipe I typically make is a cheddar cheese recipe from MacPherson’s K-9 Cookbook. These treats are a hit when I am working with dogs! They LOVE them. They are easy to store, in a container with a loose-fitting lid. And last for a while.

Spot’s Golden Cheese Dreams:
– 3 cups while wheat flour
– 1/2 cup vegetable oil
– 1 cup shredded cheese
– 1 cup milk
Preheat oven to 400 F
Line tray with parchment paper
Combine all ingredients in a bowl, knead dough on floured surface 3-4 mins. Roll out to ½ inch thickness and then use a cookie cutter or cut into squares.
Bake for 25 mins and then remove and cool on rack. Store in a container with loose fitting lid at room temperature.

I hope you get a chance to try these homemade dog treat recipes out for your dog!

Why canine massage?

Its simple. Massage feels good, and it works. Dogs have many emotional and physical ailments they can experience and massage has been shown to help improve them. In this article by Jonathon Rudinger, he discusses the benefits of canine massage and also explains why canine massage is so great. This article is definitely worth the read if you have any unanswered questions.

Massage for your dog could be the piece of the puzzle you are missing for his or her overall health picture. If you have experienced human massage you already know all about the benefits. The same experience is available for your dog.

Not only is massage a recovery option, but it is also preventative. When the muscles are healthy and have sufficient blood and nutrient flow, then they are less likely to be damaged by a slip or accident. Canine massage can also be a treatment option for separation anxiety. Allowing your dog to enjoy an experience with another person can allow them to become more relaxed without you there. In this article, Mark Oldstrom goes into detail on the anatomy of the dog and explains the way massage works. It is a good read if you enjoy learning about the benefits of canine massage and how it works on the anatomical side of things.

In summary, canine massage has many benefits and is worth looking into if you think your dog could benefit.
